Behavior Pioneers Offers ABA Therapy – Focused on Improving Specific Behaviors

According to psychology today, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a type of therapy that focuses on improving specific behaviors. These include social skills, communication, reading, and academics as well as adaptive learning skills. Among these skills are fine motor dexterity, hygiene, grooming, domestic capabilities, punctuality, and job competence.

ABA offered by Behavior Pioneers is effective for children and adults with psychological disorders in a variety of settings. These include schools, workplaces, homes, and clinics. Studies show that consistent ABA can significantly improve behaviors and skills and decrease the need for special services.

To begin with, at Behavior Pioneers, our Board-Certified Behavior Analysts apply the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis to work with each family. Specifically, their goal is to create individualized goals and behavior intervention plans that are tailored to meet the unique needs of each child. Furthermore, the focus of therapy at Behavior Pioneers is to increase skills and decrease challenging behaviors, thereby helping children achieve their maximum potential.

Common skills that the programs at Behavior Pioneers target:

1. Communication: These programs aim to enhance verbal and non-verbal communication skills, enabling children to express their needs, thoughts, and feelings more effectively. This includes teaching sign language, use of communication devices, or picture exchange systems for those with more limited verbal skills.

2. Self-help skills: Daily living skills are critical for independence. The programs focus on teaching essential self-help skills such as dressing, brushing teeth, personal hygiene, and eating independently. These skills not only promote self-reliance but also boost self-esteem as the child gains more control over their daily activities.

3. Social Skills: Developing social skills is fundamental for integrating into society and forming meaningful relationships. The programs work on teaching the nuances of social interactions, like sharing, taking turns, understanding social cues, and empathy, which are crucial for successful interactions in various social settings.

4. Eye Contact: Eye contact is a basic yet essential component of communication. Programs often include exercises and activities that encourage children to maintain appropriate eye contact, enhancing their engagement in social interactions and making communications more effective.

5. Safety: Safety skills are paramount, especially for children with special needs who might not easily recognize dangerous situations. Training includes teaching children how to cross the street, understanding what “stranger danger” means, and knowing whom to ask for help if they’re lost.

6. On-Task/Following Instructions: The ability to focus on a task and follow through with instructions is crucial for learning and completing daily activities. Programs use a variety of techniques to improve attention span, comprehend instructions, and increase task persistence.

Common behaviors that the programs at Behavior Pioneers target:

1. Aggression: Targeted interventions are designed to address and reduce instances of aggressive behavior such as hitting, biting, and pinching. Understanding the underlying cause of aggression allows therapists to implement strategies that help children learn more appropriate ways to express frustration, anger, or discomfort.

2. Tantrums: Programs aim to decrease tantrum behaviors by teaching children healthier emotional regulation techniques and coping strategies. Identifying triggers and signs leading up to a tantrum enables more proactive management.

3. Screaming: By focusing on communication skills and emotional regulation, these programs work to reduce screaming behavior. Children learn alternative ways to seek attention or express needs effectively without resorting to screaming.

4. Non-Compliance: This behavior often stems from a lack of understanding, motivation, or the skills necessary to follow through. Programs target these areas by breaking down tasks, using motivational incentives, and teaching the required skills to improve compliance with requests and instructions.

5. Self-Stimulatory Behaviors: Also known as stimming, these are repetitive body movements or noises that might be socially inappropriate. Programs focus on understanding the purpose behind these behaviors and teaching children alternative, more socially acceptable ways to fulfill their sensory needs.

6. Property Destruction: Addressing behaviors that involve breaking or damaging property involves teaching respect for belongings and implementing strategies to manage emotions that lead to such actions. Programs also teach conflict resolution skills and the use of positive outlets for frustration or anger.
